🐹Dwarf hamster: gear and buying guides
The dwarf hamster (Djungarian or Winter White) is a nocturnal dwarf species, quicker and livelier than the Syrian, better suited to watching than to long handling sessions. Cohabitation is risky even between littermates: housing it alone remains the safest choice. Its small size calls for narrow bar spacing and dwarf-sized accessories.
Profile : Around 8 to 10 cm and 35 to 50 g, a lifespan of 1.5 to 2 years, and a curious character that may nip when startled.
Dwarf hamster gear, family by family
-
🍖
Food
A low-sugar dwarf hamster mix: the species is prone to diabetes, so avoid sweet fruit, corn and honey treats. Roughly one tablespoon of food per day, plus a few low-sugar fresh vegetables.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Regular sand baths for coat care and a partial weekly habitat clean. Watch its water intake: excessive thirst can signal diabetes and warrants a vet visit.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
A solid wheel of at least 20 cm, small-diameter tunnels, cardboard mazes and seeds scattered in the bedding to encourage foraging.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
A habitat with a floor of at least 80 x 50 cm, bars spaced under 7 mm or solid tank walls. Deep bedding for digging and several hides spread around the space.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
A rigid carrier with small vents, never a wide-barred cage it could slip out of. Avoid sharp temperature swings during the journey.
-
🧰
Accessories
A water bottle suited to its small size, a ceramic bowl, a sand bath and chew items. A complete quality kit costs 80 to 150 euros.
