🐹Fancy mouse: gear and buying guides

The fancy mouse is a small, lively, nocturnal rodent best enjoyed through observation: agile and quick, it should be handled with care. Females thrive in small groups, while males fight each other and are usually kept alone. Its tiny size demands very narrow bar spacing or a tank.

Profile : Around 7 to 10 cm without the tail and 25 to 45 g, a lifespan of 1.5 to 2.5 years, and a curious, busy temperament.

Fancy mouse gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  A small daily amount of mouse pellets or mix, supplemented with fresh vegetables and a little protein. Contrary to the cliché, avoid cheese, along with fatty and sugary foods.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Weekly habitat cleaning while keeping some scented bedding; male urine smells noticeably stronger. No water baths needed, mice groom themselves.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  A solid wheel of about 15 to 20 cm, thin ropes, ladders, cardboard tubes and scattered seeds: mice climb and explore relentlessly.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A tank or cage of at least 60 x 40 cm with bars spaced under 6 mm, furnished vertically. Hemp or paper bedding and a cosy nest of shreddable material.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A small, escape-proof rigid box with fine vents; a mouse can fit through a pen-sized hole. Do transfers over a deep bin.

• 🧰 Accessories

  A miniature water bottle, small ceramic dishes, a wheel and nesting material. A complete habitat for a small group costs around 70 to 130 euros.
