🐹Syrian hamster: gear and buying guides

The Syrian hamster is strictly solitary: two adults kept in the same cage will eventually fight, sometimes to the death. Nocturnal, it sleeps during the day and becomes active in the evening, which calls for a silent wheel and a quiet spot away from bedrooms. It is the largest pet hamster, so it needs a roomy cage and a large-diameter wheel.

Profile : Around 12 to 17 cm and 100 to 180 g, a lifespan of 2 to 3 years, and a territorial temperament that tames well with patience.

Syrian hamster gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  A quality seed and pellet mix (about 10 g per day), supplemented with small pieces of fresh vegetables and a little protein (dried mealworms). It hoards food in its cheek pouches, so check its hidden stashes regularly.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Partial cage cleaning every week, keeping some scent-marked bedding to limit stress. Never bathe it in water: a chinchilla sand bath is enough to keep its coat in condition.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  A solid wheel at least 28 cm in diameter to prevent back problems, plus tunnels, hides and untreated wood chews. Enclosed exercise balls are discouraged by many vets.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A cage or tank with a floor of at least 100 x 50 cm and 20 cm or more of bedding for digging. Provide a hide and hay or unscented paper for nesting, never fluffy cotton nesting material, which can choke it.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A small, rigid, well-ventilated carrier (10 to 20 euros) lined with its usual bedding, with short trips kept away from drafts and heat. Rodent-proof the room during free-roam time: it squeezes through the smallest gap.

• 🧰 Accessories

  A water bottle or small heavy dish, a ceramic food bowl, a sand bath and chew sticks to wear down its ever-growing teeth. Budget 100 to 200 euros for a complete quality setup.
