🐹Roborovski hamster: gear and buying guides

The Roborovski is the smallest and fastest pet hamster: it is a watch-only pet, very hard to handle. Nocturnal and extremely quick, it needs plenty of floor space despite its tiny size. An escaped Robo is almost impossible to catch, so habitat security is priority number one.

Profile : Around 4.5 to 5 cm and 20 to 25 g, a lifespan of 2 to 3 years, and a skittish temperament that rarely tolerates being held.

Roborovski hamster gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  A dwarf hamster mix rich in small seeds (notably millet), supplemented with occasional fresh vegetables and a little protein now and then. Tiny portions, about one teaspoon per day.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  A sand bath is essential for this desert species: keep one available in the habitat at all times. Keep handling to the strict minimum to limit stress.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  A solid wheel of about 20 cm that it will use intensively, narrow tunnels, multiple hides and a large sand area for digging and rolling.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A tank or solid-walled bin is strongly recommended, with at least 80 x 50 cm of floor space: it slips through even tightly spaced bars. Deep bedding mixed with sand and a dry environment.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A rigid, escape-proof box with small vents; do transfers over a large bin to prevent any getaway. Never let it loose in an unsecured room.

• 🧰 Accessories

  A miniature water bottle or very shallow dish, a generous sand bath and wood chews. Setup budget of around 80 to 150 euros.
