🐹Chinchilla: gear and buying guides

The chinchilla is a crepuscular rodent from the Andes with extremely dense fur that tolerates neither water nor heat: above 25 degrees Celsius, heatstroke becomes a real risk. Its coat is maintained exclusively through special dust baths. A remarkable jumper and very long-lived, it commits you for a decade or more to a tall cage fitted with platforms.

Profile : Around 25 to 35 cm and 400 to 800 g, a lifespan of 10 to 15 years or more, and a gentle but reserved temperament that hates being restrained.

Chinchilla gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  Unlimited quality hay and a limited amount of chinchilla-specific pellets; its digestive system is delicate, so any change must be gradual. Dried fruit and sugary treats should be avoided or kept for rare occasions.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  A chinchilla dust bath (special bathing sand) offered 3 to 4 times a week for 10 to 15 minutes; never a water bath, as the fur will not dry. Keep the room below 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Apple or hazel branches to gnaw, chew stones, jumping platforms and a large solid metal wheel (35 cm or more). Its teeth grow continuously, so gnawing is vital.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A large aviary-style cage of at least 100 x 60 x 150 cm with tiered wooden platforms for jumping. A cool, dry spot away from direct sun and drafts.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A rigid, well-ventilated carrier, short trips and never above 25 degrees Celsius; in summer, travel early morning with a wrapped ice pack nearby. Never grab it by the fur: it can release patches of it to escape.

• 🧰 Accessories

  An enclosed dust bath house, a hay rack, a glass water bottle and untreated wooden shelves. Budget 250 to 450 euros for the initial setup, plus bathing dust every month.
