Litter training rats and guinea pigs: can they really learn?

What does research show about rodent toileting behaviour?
A study published in 2023 in Royal Society Open Science by Nomoto and Kansaku documented consistent "latrine" behaviour in mice: healthy individuals spontaneously concentrate their droppings on a stable site, a behaviour that clearly deteriorates under chronic stress (study on Royal Society Open Science). Rats and guinea pigs, behaviourally close to mice, show a similar tendency to return to the same corner.
Which litter box should you pick for each species?
- Rats: a small corner box with a low rim, placed in the corner the animal naturally picks after a few days of observation.
- Guinea pigs: a wider box, since this species urinates more often and moves little to do so.
- In both cases, absorbent litter different from the rest of the cage helps the animal tell the dedicated zone apart.
How do you set up the training?
Watch for a few days where the animal spontaneously eliminates most often, usually a corner away from the nest and the bowl, then place the box at that exact spot rather than wherever is convenient for you. Add a few existing droppings to reinforce the scent cue. Positive reinforcement (a treat) when you catch correct use speeds up learning, without ever scolding the animal for a mistake.
What realistic limits should you expect?
Success is rarely 100%: a rat or guinea pig will almost always still leave a few droppings outside the box while moving around, a normal behaviour for these species.
