What the sources recommend
| Source | Recommended temperature | Upper limit | Humidity |
|---|---|---|---|
| RSPCA | Ideally 50–64 °F (10–18 °C) | Can become ill in hot, wet, humid or draughty conditions | Dry, well-ventilated housing |
| Merck Veterinary Manual | Prefers 50–60 °F (10–16 °C) | Heat stroke possible above 80 °F (27 °C) | Dry, draught-free, cool housing |
| TVT | 59–70 °F (15–21 °C) | Above 82 °F (28 °C) not tolerated | Relative humidity no higher than 55% |
The cautious choice that follows from these three sources: aim for 59–68 °F (15–20 °C) all year, treat 77 °F (25 °C) as a warning threshold where you act, and 80 °F (27 °C) as dangerous. Keep humidity below 55%. This is not a comfort setting: it is the most important survival condition in this guide.
Measure before you act
In the 2024 survey, only 51% of owners had a thermometer in the room and 23% a hygrometer; almost a third had no way to monitor or control the indoor climate. A digital thermo-hygrometer with min/max memory costs a few euros or dollars and tells you, every morning, the highest temperature reached overnight and during the afternoon. Place it at the height of the top level of the enclosure: warm air rises, and that is where your chinchillas sleep.
The heatwave plan
The measures below are about organising the room. They do not replace air conditioning when the room stays above 77 °F (25 °C): in the 2024 survey, 35% of owners had air conditioning and 13% a dehumidifier.
| Room temperature | What you do |
|---|---|
| Heat forecast for the coming days | Shutters and curtains closed on the sunny side from the morning; ventilate the room at night and early morning; check the air conditioner; put ceramic or granite tiles (clean, unglazed floor tiles) in the fridge for hot days; keep your vet’s and an emergency clinic’s numbers at hand. |
| 72–77 °F (22–25 °C) | Windows closed during the hot hours; cold tiles in the enclosure (replace as soon as they warm up); runs moved to early morning or late evening; fresh water changed twice a day; closer observation. |
| 77–80 °F (25–27 °C) | Air-condition the room, or move the enclosure (or a back-up cage) to the coolest room in the home (often north-facing, ground floor or a dry basement); no free-roaming; no travel; check each animal every two hours. |
| Above 80 °F (27 °C) | Dangerous (Merck): cool the room immediately with every means available and call your vet at the slightest abnormal sign. |
