One ferret or two: should you adopt a pair?
One ferret or two? In most households, two ferrets are better than one: the ferret is a playful animal that benefits enormously from a companion of its own species, especially if you are away during the day. A pair, however, requires a nearly doubled budget and a bigger cage. Here is how to decide based on your situation.
Why do two ferrets live better than one?
Ferrets sleep a lot, but their waking phases are intense: racing, wrestling, chasing. A companion of the same species provides enrichment that no toy can replace. Two ferrets groom each other, sleep curled up together and burn off energy side by side, which reduces boredom and mischief. A very present owner who lets their ferret out several hours a day with a proper play circuit can nonetheless keep a single ferret fulfilled: find our ideas in the ferret toys and enrichment category.
How much extra does a second ferret cost?
The second ferret costs less than the first (the equipment is already there), but it still weighs on the budget:
- adoption: 50 to 150 € from a shelter, 150 to 300 € from a breeder;
- food: roughly 15 to 30 € more per month;
- vaccines and check-ups: 60 to 100 € per year at an exotics vet;
- bigger cage or extra level: 50 to 150 €;
- duplicate hammocks, bowl and litter box: 30 to 50 €.

How do you make two ferrets get along?
Introduce them on neutral ground, under supervision, over several days. High-pitched screams, sustained bites and fear-marking mean you should separate them and start again more slowly. A neutered male-female pair or two females usually bond most easily. Always provide two sleeping areas and two bowls to prevent competition.
When is a single ferret the better choice?
An older ferret used to living alone, a sick animal or an already tight budget are all good reasons to stick to one animal. A single, well-stimulated ferret is better than two neglected ones. Frequently asked questions
Can a lone ferret get depressed?
Yes, chronic boredom is real: lethargy, compulsive licking, aggression. If your single ferret is declining despite daily playtime, talk to an exotics vet and consider a companion.
Can you adopt two ferrets of very different ages?
It is possible, but a very playful youngster can exhaust a senior. Schedule separate rest periods and keep an eye on the older one’s weight.
Do two ferrets need two cages?
Not if the cage is big enough (at least 100 × 60 × 100 cm for a pair), but yes during the introduction period or in the event of conflict.
