What research shows about ferret personality
A study by Talbot, Freire and Wassens, published in 2021 in the journal Animals, collected responses from 743 owners rating 1,029 ferrets across 67 behavioral traits through an online questionnaire (study on PMC). A principal component analysis identified four main personality dimensions, accounting for 47.1% of total variance: Extraversion, Sociability, Attentiveness and Neuroticism. Males scored higher on sociability overall, females scored higher on Attentiveness and Neuroticism, and Extraversion generally declined with age.
What these profiles change day to day
- Highly extraverted ferret: gets the most out of XXL tunnels and modular play courses and frequent supervised free time.
- Sociable ferret: actively seeks contact, whether a cage mate or extended daily interaction with its owner.
- Attentive or anxious ferret: reacts strongly to environmental changes and benefits more from stable routines than constant novelty.
- Senior ferret: since Extraversion tends to decline with age, calmer enrichment often takes over from the most physical games.
Matching enrichment to temperament rather than the average
Instead of buying toys at random, watching where a ferret sits on these four dimensions over a few weeks helps prioritize purchases: a less sociable ferret won't necessarily benefit from a second cage mate, while a highly active one will quickly grow bored of overly static enrichment.
