  Like the Labrador, the Golden tends to gain weight: roughly 300-380 g of kibble per day for a moderately active 30 kg adult, keeping treats in check. Splitting food into two meals aids digestion.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Its medium-length coat with a dense undercoat sheds heavily: brush 2-3 times a week with a slicker brush and undercoat rake, daily during shedding season. Floppy ears plus a love of water make ear infections common, so dry and check them regularly.

  A passionate retriever, it loves training dummies, balls and floating toys. Its jaws are strong but it is often less destructive than other breeds, so quality size L rubber toys last well.
