The Border Collie, often cited as the smartest breed in the world, weighs between 14 and 22 kg. It is an exceptional athlete that demands challenging daily activity, both physical and mental. Gear-wise, invest in enrichment toys, dog-sport equipment and a quiet resting spot.

Border Collie gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  Plan on roughly 200-300 g of kibble per day for a very active 18 kg adult, adjusting strongly with workload (an agility or herding Border may need notably more). A diet rich in quality protein supports its activity level.

  Brush once or twice a week, more when shedding; its medium-length coat easily picks up twigs and mud on outings. Keep an eye on paw-pad wear in very sporty individuals.

  This is THE dog-sport breed: agility, disc dog, treibball and advanced puzzle games. Watch out for ball obsession, common in Borders: vary the activities and teach it to switch off too.

  An 80-100 cm bed fits its frame. Highly sensitive to stimuli (movement, noise), it benefits from a bed in a quiet room, or even an open crate as a den.

  A size M crate is ideal, especially since many Borders travel often for competitions. Some individuals fixate on moving cars or bikes: a well-fitted harness and short lead keep urban walks safe.

  A size M Y-harness, long line, soft frisbee and a shepherd's whistle for distance recall make a coherent kit. For agility at home, starter weave poles and a jump cost 40-80 €.
