🐕German Shepherd: gear and buying guides

The German Shepherd is an intelligent, loyal working dog weighing 22 to 40 kg depending on sex. Versatile and athletic, it needs robust L/XL equipment and plenty of mental stimulation. Its heavy shedding and sometimes sensitive digestion also shape the gear you should choose.

• 🍖 Food

  Plan on roughly 350-450 g of kibble per day for an active 35 kg adult male. The breed is prone to bloat and digestive sensitivity: split food into two meals, feed in a calm setting and avoid hard exercise right after eating.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Its very thick undercoat sheds year-round with two big seasonal peaks: an undercoat rake and curry brush used 2-3 times a week are essential. A pet-hair vacuum quickly becomes your best friend.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  A working dog through and through, it needs mental challenges as much as exercise: tug toys (bite rolls, ropes), snuffle mats and puzzle games are all recommended. Pick very tough materials, as its bite is powerful.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  Plan on a 100-120 cm bed. Hip dysplasia is a well-known predisposition in the breed, so an orthopaedic high-density foam bed (60-130 €) is especially worthwhile, even from adulthood.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  An XL crate or a solid boot guard is the safest option for a dog this size. For sporty or working dogs, a rugged harness with a top handle makes handling easier.

  A reinforced L/XL Y-harness (40-70 €), a biothane or thick leather lead and a 10 m long line for obedience work. A reflective collar helps for early-morning or late-evening walks.
