🐕Shar-Pei: gear and buying guides
The Shar-Pei is a Chinese dog of 18 to 25 kg, calm, dignified and reserved with strangers, famous for its wrinkled skin and bluish tongue. Its folds, eyes and tiny ears require regular, rigorous care, and its sensitive skin guides both product and food choices. It tolerates heat and intense summer exercise poorly.
Profile : Medium dog of 44 to 51 cm and 18 to 25 kg, short harsh coat over wrinkled skin, moderate energy.

🍖
Food
Food allergies and intolerances are common in the breed: many Shar-Peis do better on a hypoallergenic or single-protein diet chosen with the vet. Any loss of appetite with fever should raise concern, as Shar-Pei familial fever is a breed-specific disease.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Check the folds several times a week and above all dry them thoroughly after every bath or swim: trapped moisture quickly causes dermatitis and skin maceration. The very narrow ear canals and the eyes, sometimes prone to entropion, deserve regular monitoring.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
Less playful than terriers, the Shar-Pei enjoys calm games: snuffle mats, chews and short training sessions suit its composed temperament. Toys should still be sturdy, as its jaws are powerful despite its placid manner.

🏠
Bedding & habitat
An M/L bed with a removable cover in a cool, dry spot is ideal, as the sensitive skin tolerates damp or dusty bedding poorly. A moderately short-muzzled dog, it must stay indoors in the cool during hot spells.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
Walk early morning or late evening in summer: its short muzzle and thick skin make it prone to heatstroke, and hard exercise in hot weather is off-limits. In the car, a ventilated M/L crate, and never park in the sun, even briefly.
-
🧰
Accessories
The breed-specific kit: wipes or gauze pads for the folds, a dedicated microfibre drying towel, an ear solution suited to narrow canals and a cooling mat for summer (20 to 40 €). A well-fitted Y-harness avoids rubbing the neck and shoulder folds.
