In short: Medium dog of 44 to 51 cm and 18 to 25 kg, short harsh coat over wrinkled skin, moderate energy. Calm, dignified and reserved with strangers, loyal without being demonstrative. Its trademark folds macerate at the slightest damp: checking and careful drying are part of the routine.
In the car with a Shar-Pei
For its 18 to 25 kg, two serious options: a rigid crate of about 85 cm strapped in the boot, or a crash-tested safety harness clipped to ISOFIX. An unrestrained dog of this weight becomes a projectile under braking — and a possible fine for distracted driving.
Trains, planes, holidays
Too big for the cabin, the Shar-Pei flies in the pressurised hold in an IATA-approved crate — an ordeal to reserve for unavoidable trips, and one many airlines refuse for brachycephalic breeds, vulnerable to heat and respiratory stress. On trains, a muzzle and lead meet the rules. Plan the habituation: a Shar-Pei that eats and naps in its open crate at home will treat it as a den, not a trap.
Identification and good habits
A Shar-Pei travels chipped and vaccinated — EU passport and rabies shot whenever a border or boarding kennel is involved. And in summer, the absolute rule: never alone in the car, where temperatures turn lethal within minutes.
