  Growth stretches over 18 to 24 months and must stay slow: a giant-breed junior kibble, weighed rations, and no intense exercise or repeated stairs during this period. Two meals a day and digestive rest reduce the gastric torsion risk.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Whether short- or long-coated, its dense undercoat needs brushing two to three times a week, daily during shedding. Drool is plentiful: wipe the jowls several times a day and keep towels around the house.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Not very playful as an adult, it prefers quiet walks in cool weather, scent games and chewing on giant-sized toys. The puppy, however, must be held back: no jumping or sliding on tiles during growth.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  Plan on an XXL mattress of 120 to 140 cm, preferably orthopedic, to support a weight that can exceed 80 kg. Set it up in the coolest room: this mountain dog copes very poorly with summer heat.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A van or large estate car with a divider and loading ramp is practically mandatory, as no standard harness is designed for this weight. Air conditioning is a must, and never leave it waiting in a parked vehicle, even in the shade.

• 🧰 Accessories

  Stable XXL bowls, a large cooling mat and a sturdy folding ramp (often 60 to 150 euros to bear this weight) form the basics. Budget accordingly overall: food, parasite treatments and accessories are all priced by size.
