  An adult Leonberger commonly eats 500 to 700 g of large-breed kibble per day, around 15 to 20 kg per month. An elevated bowl and kibble rich in joint-support nutrients help protect its joints during the long growth phase.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Its long coat with a dense undercoat needs brushing 2 to 3 times a week with a slicker brush and undercoat rake, daily during shedding season. Check the drop ears regularly and dry the chest well after swimming, which it loves.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Choose XL solid rubber toys, as standard toys will not survive its jaws. Scent games and water work suit it better than repeated fetch, which should be avoided while it is still growing.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  It needs an XXL bed of at least 120 cm, ideally an orthopedic memory-foam mattress to prevent pressure sores and relieve the joints. Its undercoat makes it cold-hardy but heat-sensitive, so plan a cooling mat for summer.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  In the car, only a giant-size crate (around 120 cm) or a sturdy divider in a large boot will do. A loading ramp avoids jumps that damage the hips of a dog this heavy.
