🐕Akita: gear and buying guides
The Akita is a large primitive Japanese dog (30 to 45 kg), calm, dignified and deeply attached to its family, but reserved with strangers and often intolerant of same-sex dogs. Its independence calls for patient training and reliable gear, especially for outings. Its double coat blows out heavily twice a year.
Profile : Large dog, 58 to 70 cm and 30 to 45 kg, short dense double coat, moderate energy, independent temperament.

🍖
Food
Expect roughly 350 to 500 g of kibble per day; the breed is prone to certain skin and digestive sensitivities, which makes single-protein recipes such as fish or poultry worthwhile. Some Akitas eat in phases, so resist the urge to pile on treats.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
A very clean, almost cat-like dog, it has little odor and grooms itself; weekly brushing is enough outside shedding season. During the two annual sheds the undercoat comes out in thick tufts: use a rake and slicker daily for 2 to 3 weeks.

🎾
Toys & enrichment
A primitive breed with little interest in fetch, it prefers short games and scent activities over repetitive drills that bore it. Sturdy chew toys and calm occupations (lick mats, natural chews) suit its composed temperament better.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
It appreciates a size L bed placed at a vantage point from which it calmly watches the household. Rarely destructive as an adult, it tolerates moderate alone time well but remains a guardian: a solid fence prevents fence-line clashes with neighborhood dogs.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
Its reactivity toward other dogs calls for a short, strong leash in town and a rigid size L crate in the car, which also reassures it on trips. Since primitive-breed recall is unreliable, a long line is the norm in unfenced areas.

🧰
Accessories
A three-strap escape-proof harness is a smart choice: a startled Akita can back out of a standard harness. Add a basket muzzle conditioned gently, useful at the vet and on public transport.
