🐕English Pointer: gear and buying guides
The English Pointer is an aristocratic pointing dog of 20 to 30 kg, gentle at home and a tireless galloper outdoors. Built to quarter vast grounds at high speed, it needs to run every day, not merely walk. Its very short coat and low body fat make it especially sensitive to cold and damp.
Profile : Large dog, 61 to 69 cm and 20 to 30 kg, very short fine coat, very high energy outdoors, calm at home.

🍖
Food
This lean galloper burns plenty: around 280 to 400 g of energy-dense kibble per day, increased markedly in full activity season to maintain condition. Like all deep-chested dogs, two meals a day and rest after exercise reduce the risk of bloat.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Its very short coat takes five minutes a week with a rubber mitt, but its thin skin scrapes easily in brambles: check pads, sternum and ears after every outing. Hard resting surfaces quickly cause elbow calluses on this lean dog.

🎾
Toys & enrichment
Nothing replaces galloping: long running sessions in secure terrain or on a long line, complemented by bikejoring or canicross for sporty owners. Nose games and dummies keep its scenting mind busy on rest days.

🏠
Bedding & habitat
Lean and cold-sensitive, it needs a thick, well-padded size L bed away from drafts; many Pointers crawl under a blanket. Surprisingly calm indoors once exercised, it adapts to house life if its daily outlet is guaranteed.

🧳
Travel & safety
In the car, use a rigid size L crate with a thick mat to protect its lightly padded joints. Its dramatic point at a bird can freeze it then launch it into a sprint: whistle-trained recall and a 10 to 15 m long line are essential in open country.

🧰
Accessories
A waterproof winter coat is no gimmick for this breed: in cold rain a Pointer shivers quickly. Add a Y-harness fitted to its deep chest, a recall whistle and a high-visibility vest; expect 30 to 60 euros for a good size L coat.
