• 🍖 Food

  The breed is predisposed to food-related skin allergies and sensitivities: a single-protein or sensitive-skin diet often helps, to be confirmed with the vet. A greedy small breed: watch the weight, as a few hundred extra grams show quickly on 8 kg.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  The harsh white coat is ideally maintained by hand-stripping every 8 to 12 weeks at a groomer (50 to 80 € per session), as clipping softens the coat and dulls the white. Between sessions, brush twice a week and use a mild shampoo for sensitive skin.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Bred to hunt rodents, the Westie loves squeaky toys, digging games and a garden digging pit that saves your flowerbeds. Its toys must be sturdy yet sized for its small but powerful jaws.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A 60 to 70 cm bed with a washable cover works well, since dirt and mud show fast on the white coat. The Westie adapts very well to apartment life if walks and play needs are met, but remains a willing watchdog barker.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  An S/M Y-harness avoids pressure on the windpipe of this small dog that pulls with conviction. In the car, an S crate or a secured booster seat works; in the garden, check the fence down to the ground, as it happily digs underneath.

  Invest in a good slicker brush, a metal comb and possibly a stripping knife if you learn to hand-strip. A dedicated towel by the door quickly becomes essential for white paws after rainy walks.
