🐕Rhodesian Ridgeback: gear and buying guides

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large, powerful, independent dog, recognisable by the ridge of reversed hair along its back. Its 30 to 40 kg of muscle and strong chase instinct demand properly sized gear: a robust harness, a solid long line and an XL bed. It is calm at home but needs substantial daily exercise.

• 🍖 Food

  A large, deep-chested breed: split the ration into two meals and avoid intense exercise for an hour afterwards to limit bloat risk. Adult Ridgebacks enjoy their food; weigh portions, as excess weight quickly strains the joints of a dog this size.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  The short wheaten coat needs only a weekly rubber mitt and sheds moderately. Keep an eye on the ridge area and lower back: the breed can be affected by dermoid sinus, a congenital defect the breeder should have screened for.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  With sighthound heritage, it loves the chase: large flirt poles, straight-line lure runs in enclosed fields and scent games channel its instinct. Toys must be robust, as its jaws destroy ordinary plush toys in minutes.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A thick XL bed (110 to 120 cm) is essential: with a short coat and heavily loaded joints, the Ridgeback avoids hard floors. Despite its rugged look it is an indoor dog, sensitive to cold damp, and does badly left out in the garden.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  At 35 kg moving at full speed, safety is non-negotiable: a reinforced Y-harness with a handle, a solid 2 m lead and a 10 m long line in open country while recall around game remains uncertain. In the car, an XL crate or a boot guard.

• 🧰 Accessories

  Plan large, stable bowls, ideally on a stand suited to its height, and a reflective collar or harness for evening outings. A light coat is useful in winter in cold regions, as the short coat insulates little at rest.
