🐕Shiba Inu: gear and buying guides
The Shiba Inu is a small primitive Japanese dog of 8 to 11 kg, lively, clean and wildly independent, famous for its high-pitched protest, the shiba scream. Its notoriously unreliable recall and escape skills dictate most of the gear: secure harness and long line. Compact, but a dog with real character.
Profile : Small dog, 35 to 41 cm and 8 to 11 kg, short dense double coat, medium to high energy, very independent.

🍖
Food
Expect around 120 to 180 g of small-bite kibble per day; some Shibas have skin sensitivities that justify a fish-based, omega-3-rich recipe. Often picky, it may snub its bowl without being ill, so avoid constant food switching.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Almost cat-like in cleanliness, it licks itself, avoids puddles and barely smells: rare baths and weekly brushing suffice. Twice a year the shed turns the house into an undercoat blizzard: daily slicker brushing and a serious vacuum cleaner.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
It plays on its own terms and tires quickly of repetitive games: rotate scent toys, food puzzles and short sessions. Many Shibas guard their toys possessively, so trading exercises should start early.

🏠
Bedding & habitat
A size S/M bed is enough, though it often prefers a sofa back or a high vantage point to watch from. It adapts well to apartment life if its two active daily outings are guaranteed.

🧳
Travel & safety
Never unclip a Shiba in open areas: the breed is famous for ignoring recall the moment a scent trail beckons. In the car, a size S/M crate suits this den-loving dog; on walks, a 5 to 10 m long line is your best ally.

🧰
Accessories
A three-strap escape-proof harness is almost mandatory: the Shiba is an expert at backing out of a classic H-harness. Expect 30 to 50 euros for a well-fitted secure model, plus a collar GPS for the most escape-prone individuals.
