🐕Alaskan Malamute: gear and buying guides
The Alaskan Malamute is the heavyweight of sled dogs: 34 to 43 kg of power built for hauling heavy loads, not for speed. Independent and sometimes stubborn, it demands an experienced owner and gear sized for its strength. Its arctic coat requires serious shedding and heat management.
Profile : Large dog, 58 to 66 cm and 34 to 43 kg, thick arctic coat with woolly undercoat, high energy and great pulling power.

🍖
Food
Like the Husky, it makes very efficient use of its food: expect roughly 350 to 500 g of protein-rich kibble per day depending on workload. A renowned food thief with a hearty appetite, it gains weight quickly if the ration does not follow reduced exercise.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Its woolly undercoat produces spectacular blowouts twice a year: an undercoat rake, slicker brush and ideally a dog blower become essential. Between sheds, two brushings a week are enough; never shave this insulating coat.

🎾
Toys & enrichment
An inveterate digger, it appreciates a dedicated garden corner or sandpit so it can dig without wrecking flowerbeds. Toys must be near-indestructible (solid rubber, size L/XL), and load-pulling work (weight pulling, hiking with dog packs) matches its original job.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
It happily sleeps outside in deep cold but suffers above 25 degrees C: shade, fresh water and a cooling mat are mandatory in summer. A tall fence with a buried base is required, as it digs under wire fencing with formidable efficiency.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
Plan on a size L/XL reinforced metal crate: its power destroys fabric crates. With unreliable recall and considerable strength, a sturdy long line remains the rule outside enclosed areas.
-
🧰
Accessories
Choose a reinforced pulling harness in size L and a leash with a locking carabiner: a lunging Malamute can pull an adult off balance. A hiking belt with a bungee line (40 to 80 euros) protects your back on walks.
