Born from crossing the Siamese with the Burmese, the Tonkinese is a medium-sized cat (2.5 to 5.5 kg), sociable, talkative and very playful. It copes poorly with being alone and demands daily interaction. Its equipment should focus on interactive play and elevated lookout spots.

Tonkinese gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  Active and muscular, the Tonkinese burns calories well, but its greediness calls for a controlled ration. Slow-feeder bowls or food-dispensing toys stretch out meals while keeping it stimulated.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Its silky short coat, with almost no undercoat, only needs weekly brushing or a rubber grooming glove. A polish with a chamois cloth brings out its shine.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  It is one of the most interactive cats: fetch games, wand toys and food puzzles should be rotated weekly. Without stimulation, it can become noisy or destructive.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  Provide a cat tree with several high perches and a view of the living area, as it wants to be part of everything. A second cat or regular human presence is strongly advised to prevent boredom.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  Curious and confident, it adapts well to a carrier if it stays accessible daily as a den. A standard-size carrier (30 to 60 euros) with a blanket carrying its scent limits vocalizing in the car.

  A stable vertical scratcher, food-dispensing toys and a suction-cup window perch make up its basic kit. Some Tonkinese happily accept a harness for supervised outings.
