  A hearty eater, the American Shorthair lives long (often 15 years and more) provided it stays trim: a weighed ration and a slow-feeder bowl or food-dispensing toy are recommended. Adjust intake after neutering.

  Its short but dense coat sheds noticeably in spring and autumn: step up to two or three brushings a week then, versus one the rest of the year. A hardy breed, it needs few special treatments.
