🐈Maine Coon: gear and buying guides
The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds, with males reaching 8 to 10 kg. Gentle and sociable, it stays playful into adulthood. Its exceptional size means almost everything must be oversized: reinforced cat tree, extra-large litter box and XL carrier.
Profile : Very large cat (5 to 10 kg depending on sex), dense semi-long coat, moderate energy but playful.

-
🍖
Food
Its growth is slow, lasting up to 3 or 4 years: a protein-rich diet suited to large breeds is recommended. Its portions are well above average, so budget more for food and choose wide bowls that fit its muzzle.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Its semi-long coat needs brushing 2 to 3 times a week with a long-toothed comb and a slicker brush to prevent mats, especially during shedding. Many Maine Coons like water, which makes occasional baths easier.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
Playful and intelligent, it enjoys sturdy large teaser wands and solid toys that stand up to its powerful jaw. Many learn to fetch; small or flimsy toys do not last long.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
A reinforced cat tree is essential: platforms of at least 45 cm, thick posts and a heavy, stable base, or it will tip over. Plan an XXL bed of 60 cm or more, often found in the small-dog section.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
An XL carrier of 60 cm or more is needed, often a small-dog model. Check the maximum supported weight and favour a reinforced handle or a trolley, as carrying 8 kg by hand quickly gets tiring.
-
🧰
Accessories
Choose a very large litter box, ideally an XXL tray of 60 cm or more, or even a repurposed storage box: standard trays are too small. Expect an overall extra cost of 30 to 50 percent compared with equipping an average cat.
