Exotic Shorthair gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  Its flat face makes picking up kibble difficult: favor wide, shallow bowls (or plates) and kibble shaped for brachycephalic breeds. Being fairly inactive, it is prone to weight gain: measure the daily ration.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Clean the facial folds and eye area daily with a pad and eye lotion, as tearing is common in flat-faced cats. Despite the short coat, its dense undercoat needs brushing two to three times a week.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  A placid cat, it prefers short, gentle play sessions: feather teasers, light balls and catnip toys. A few minutes several times a day are enough to keep it fit.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A moderately tall cat tree with wide cushioned platforms suits it better than a towering structure. Sensitive to heat due to its flat face, its bed should sit in a cool, well-ventilated room in summer.

  Its breathing can be noisy and worsen with stress and heat: choose a well-ventilated rigid carrier and avoid travel during hot hours. For air travel, most airlines restrict brachycephalic breeds in the hold.
