🦜Zebra finch: gear and buying guides
The zebra finch is a sparkling little exotic that lives in groups and should never be kept alone: a pair or small colony is essential. It is not a bird that tames, but its constant bustle and nasal little calls cheerfully liven up a room. A large cage or aviary matters more than any other piece of equipment.
Profile : Around 10 cm, 5 to 8 year lifespan, low but continuous noise level.
Zebra finch gear, family by family
-
🍖
Food
A finch seed mix, millet, fresh greens and egg food during breeding. Clean water at all times, refreshed daily since it happily bathes in it.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
A shallow bath offered almost daily. Nails grow fast in this species: natural wood perches of varied diameters reduce the need for trimming.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
Few toys, but branches, swings and leafy hideaways for flitting and exploring. The real enrichment comes from group life and flying space.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
A cage at least 80 cm wide for a pair, an indoor aviary from 150 euros for a small group. Provide wicker nests you can close off if you do not want breeding, as zebra finches nest readily.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
A small, dark, ventilated transport box: darkness calms it during the trip. Catch it gently; its tiny heart copes poorly with prolonged chases.
-
🧰
Accessories
Multiple feeders to avoid competition within the group, cuttlebone and an easy-clean cage floor. Captive-bred ringed birds are preferable: ask for the ring details when buying.
