🦜Ring-necked parakeet: gear and buying guides
A large, slender parakeet with a long tail, the ring-necked parakeet is intelligent, sometimes an excellent talker, but more independent than cuddly. Its powerful, piercing voice carries far, making it better suited to a house than a small apartment. Its tail and energy demand a very large cage or an aviary.
Profile : Around 40 cm, half of it tail, 20 to 30 year lifespan, high noise level.

-
🍖
Food
Parakeet pellets, fruit, vegetables and a seed mix as a supplement. It enjoys shelled nuts as rewards, to be rationed as they are high in fat.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Regular lukewarm misting to maintain the plumage, which it prefers to a bath. An annual avian vet check is advisable given its long lifespan.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
Foraging toys, ropes, ladders and chew wood replaced often, because its clever mind gets bored fast. Teaching words and tricks makes excellent daily stimulation.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
A cage at least one metre wide with plenty of height for its tail, budget 200 to 400 euros, an aviary being ideal. As the species has established wild populations in many cities, identification or registration formalities may apply depending on local regulations: check before buying.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
A rigid carrier sized for a medium parrot, with a low perch and room for the tail. Never let it out near an open window: it is a powerful flyer that will not easily come back.
-
🧰
Accessories
Large-diameter hardwood perches, stainless steel bowls and a harness only after long, gradual training. A freestanding play stand channels its urge to climb.
