🦜Sun conure: gear and buying guides

The sun conure is a small South American parrot with blazing plumage, extremely affectionate and playful, that loves snuggling against its human. The flip side: its shrill calls are among the most piercing of any parrot its size, making it a hard fit for shared-wall apartments. It needs near-constant companionship and plenty of toys.

Sun conure gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  Conure pellets as the base, fresh fruit and vegetables every day, seeds as a limited supplement. Tropical fruits like papaya and mango echo its natural diet.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  It loves bathing: offer a water dish or daily misting. Watch the plumage, as boredom or loneliness can trigger feather plucking in this highly social species.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Destructible toys, ropes, rings and foraging toys in constant rotation. It also loves fabric tunnels and hammocks to sleep snuggled up.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A cage at least 80 to 100 cm wide with sturdy bars, around 150 to 300 euros. This species is covered by international protection measures: insist on a ringed, captive-bred bird with its transfer paperwork.

  A rigid carrier with a low perch, plus a light cover to calm it in the car. Get it used to travel young, as it hates being separated from its flock.
