🦜Macaw: gear and buying guides

The giant of the parrot world, the macaw impresses with its wingspan, a beak that cracks the hardest nuts and calls that carry for hundreds of metres. It is a spectacular, affectionate companion, but its size demands a massive cage or aviary, oversized toys and tolerant neighbours. Taking one on is a life project, rarely compatible with apartment living.

Legal status

Depending on the species, macaws fall under CITES Appendix I or II (EU Annex A or B): buy from a registered breeder, with a ringed or microchipped bird, and an intra-EU certificate for Annex A species.

Macaw gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  Large-parrot pellets, vegetables, fruit and a bigger share of in-shell nuts than other parrots, as its metabolism handles more fat. Cracking shells also exercises its beak and keeps it busy.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Regular showers, ideally a fine spray greeted with spread wings. Beak and nails are best maintained through natural abrasive perches and wood to demolish.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Oversized hardwood toys, destructible blocks and complex foraging setups, with stainless steel hardware because it dismantles everything. Plan a real monthly budget: a macaw destroys in days what a small parrot wears out in months.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A massive cage at least 1.2 metres wide in heavy-gauge steel, often 800 to 2000 euros, with an aviary being the real answer. Macaws fall under strict protection conventions, some species on Appendix I: origin paperwork, identification and formalities are unavoidable.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A reinforced carrier built for large parrots, in aluminium or thick plastic with a bolted perch. Its beak exerts tremendous pressure: never undersize the equipment.

• 🧰 Accessories

  A large parrot tree, very thick hardwood perches, lockable stainless steel bowls and foot toys. A dedicated room or a sheltered outdoor aviary makes all the difference to its wellbeing.
