🦜Gouldian finch: gear and buying guides
The Gouldian finch is one of the most colourful aviary birds in the world, calm, quiet and strictly gregarious: it must live in a pair or small group. More delicate than the zebra finch, it is sensitive to cold and sudden temperature swings, which dictates aviary placement and sometimes supplemental heating. It is a bird to watch, not to handle.
Profile : 13 to 14 cm, 6 to 8 year lifespan, very low noise level.
Gouldian finch gear, family by family
-
🍖
Food
A quality finch seed mix, sprouted seeds, fine greens and egg food during moult and breeding. Minerals from cuttlebone and suitable grit support its demanding plumage.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Keep the room at around 20 degrees or above, free of draughts; a puffed-up bird is a warning sign. Offer a regular shallow bath and monitor the moult, often tricky in this species.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
Few toys: natural branches, varied perches and the company of its own kind are its enrichment. Safe planting in the aviary provides hiding spots and living perches.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
An indoor aviary or large cage at least one metre wide for a pair, from 150 euros, in a bright, temperate room. Choose ringed, captive-bred birds and keep the transfer paperwork.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
A dark, ventilated transport box kept away from the cold, winter journeys being the riskiest for this bird. Keep trips to the strict minimum, as stress is its worst enemy.
-
🧰
Accessories
Natural wood perches, multiple feeders, cuttlebone and possibly a heat or avian UV lamp in winter. A thermometer next to the aviary lets you monitor temperature continuously.
