The African grey is renowned as the most gifted talking parrot and one of the most intelligent, able to link words to meaning. That intelligence comes at a price: without intense daily stimulation it gets bored and may start feather plucking. Adopting one is a commitment spanning decades, with a substantial ongoing budget for foraging toys.

Profile : Around 33 cm, lifespan of 40 to 60 years and sometimes beyond 50, moderate noise level but strikingly realistic imitated sounds.

• 🍖 Food

  Quality pellets as the main base, topped up with vegetables, fruit and a few nuts. The species is prone to calcium deficiency: natural light or an avian UV lamp plus a balanced diet are essential.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Regular misting to limit its feather powder and keep the skin healthy. Follow-up care with an avian vet is strongly advised over such a long life.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Foraging toys are non-negotiable and must rotate constantly: food puzzles, unscrewable hideaways, paper to shred. Budget for a real monthly spend, because an idle grey is a grey in decline.

  A cage at least one metre wide in sturdy steel, budget 400 to 800 euros, plus an out-of-cage play area. The species is listed on CITES Appendix I: identification, origin paperwork and registration formalities are mandatory, so research the requirements carefully before buying.

  A rigid large-parrot carrier with a bolted perch. It is an emotionally sensitive bird: abrupt changes of environment should be introduced gradually.
