🐇Lionhead: gear and buying guides
The lionhead rabbit owes its name to the mane of long fur framing its head, contrasting with the shorter coat on the rest of the body. A small breed of around 1.3 to 1.7 kg, it is lively, playful and sometimes stubborn. Its mane requires proper grooming equipment and attention to fur ingestion.
Profile : Around 1.3 to 1.7 kg as an adult, long-haired mane around the head, lively and playful temperament.
Lionhead gear, family by family
-
🍖
Food
Unlimited hay is doubly important for the lionhead: it wears down the teeth and keeps digestion moving, which helps pass the mane fur swallowed during self-grooming. A few strands of fresh grass are a useful addition to the ration.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Brush the mane two to three times a week with a soft brush, and daily during moulting to limit mats and hairballs. Also check around the eyes, where long fur can cause irritation.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
It is a small, energetic rabbit: tunnels, low platforms and push toys channel its need for activity. Avoid long-fibre fabric toys that tangle in its mane.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
A pen of at least 2 square metres with quality dust-extracted bedding: fine shavings cling to the long mane fur. Hemp or flax bedding limits this problem.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
A small rigid carrier is enough for this size. In summer, be careful: its dense mane makes it more sensitive to heatstroke, so never leave it in a car in the sun.
-
🧰
Accessories
Invest in a soft brush and a wide-toothed comb dedicated to the mane (around 10 to 20 euros). A wide ceramic bowl keeps the chin fur from constantly soaking in the water.
