Even after generations of domestication, digging behaviour remains largely instinctive in rabbits; without a suitable outlet, they often redirect that drive toward the litter, the carpet, or the base of a piece of furniture, with the damage that implies.
How do you set up an effective digging box?
- A wide, low container: a rigid plastic tub at least 40 x 60 cm is enough for a medium-sized rabbit, without sides too high to climb.
- A safe substrate: untreated garden soil, non-resinous wood shavings, or shredded paper — never clay-based litter, which can be swallowed by accident.
- Buried objects: a few pieces of compressed hay or cardboard hidden in the substrate extend how long the session holds interest.
- A dedicated spot: always in the same place, ideally away from the regular litter box to avoid any confusion.
