The Dutch rabbit is instantly recognisable by its distinctive two-tone coat, with a white front and facial blaze contrasting with coloured hindquarters. Weighing around 2 to 2.5 kg, it is even-tempered, sociable and easy-going, making it an ideal breed for first-time owners. Its intermediate size works well with standard rabbit equipment.

  A hardy breed with no special requirements: unlimited hay, pellets rationed to its weight of around 2 to 2.5 kg and varied daily greens. Its food motivation makes it a good candidate for training treats, counted as part of the ration.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Its short coat only needs weekly brushing, stepped up during the spring and autumn moults. It is an overall robust breed: routine care comes down to nails, teeth and a regular check of the eyes and ears.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Curious and playful, the Dutch responds well to enrichment toys: pellet-dispensing balls, snuffle mats and rabbit puzzle games. It happily learns small exercises with clicker training.

  A standard pen of at least 2 square metres with daily free-roaming time suits it well. Being sociable, it thrives in a neutered pair, which means doubling the sleeping areas and hideouts.
