The hermine rabbit, known as the Britannia Petite in English-speaking countries, is an elegant dwarf breed with a fine, arched body, weighing around 1 to 1.4 kg. Very lively and sometimes highly strung, it needs a patient owner and gentle handling. Its energy and light weight point towards secure housing and miniature accessories.

• 🍖 Food

  This small athletic rabbit burns a lot of energy yet remains tiny: unlimited hay, a weighed pellet ration of around 20 to 25 g per day and greens introduced gradually. Watch its weight, as rapid loss shows quickly on such a small body.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Its silky short coat only needs a quick weekly brushing. The real challenge is behavioural: get it used to handling very early, as a stressed Britannia Petite struggles and can injure itself during care; work at floor level rather than up high.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  It is one of the most active rabbits: offer varied circuits, tunnels, small platforms and frequently rotated toys to keep its quick mind busy. Boredom quickly turns into nervousness and destructive behaviour in this breed.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  Despite its small size, its exercise needs justify a roomy pen of 2 to 3 square metres and long daily free-roaming sessions. Secure the space carefully: light and springy, it jumps higher than its size suggests.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A small rigid carrier lined with hay and a non-slip mat limits travel stress, which is more pronounced in this highly strung breed. Partially cover the carrier with a cloth to soften stimulation during the journey.

• 🧰 Accessories

  As with the Polish, everything must come in mini format: a litter tray with a low entrance, shallow bowls and narrow hideouts where it feels safe. A modular pen with tall panels (at least 80 cm) contains its jumps better.
