🐇Dwarf Rabbit: gear and buying guides

The dwarf rabbit is the most popular small-sized companion, lively and curious despite weighing only around 1 to 1.5 kg. Its compact build does not mean it can live in a small space: it needs to run and jump every day. Plan for a roomy pen, hideouts sized for its body and lightweight accessories it can handle.

Profile : Around 1 to 1.5 kg as an adult, easy-care short coat, lively and playful but sometimes timid temperament.

Dwarf Rabbit gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

  The dwarf rabbit has a sensitive digestive system and a small stomach: unlimited hay, roughly 25 to 30 g of pellets per day and fresh greens introduced gradually. Avoid seed mixes, which are too rich for a small breed prone to weight gain.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Its short coat needs weekly brushing, more often during moulting. Keep an eye on its teeth: dwarfism increases the risk of dental malocclusion, which makes unlimited hay and regular vet checks essential.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Choose small, lightweight toys: wicker balls, tunnels 15 to 20 cm in diameter, snuffle mats. A bored dwarf rabbit will chew on furniture, so provide chew toys and rotate them regularly.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  Despite its small size, plan for a pen of at least 2 square metres with daily supervised free-roaming time. Cages sold as suitable for dwarf rabbits are often too small for permanent housing.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A small rigid cat carrier (around 30 to 40 euros) is more than enough. Line the bottom with a non-slip mat, as a lightweight dwarf rabbit slides around easily during the journey.

• 🧰 Accessories

  Go for a small corner litter tray, heavy ceramic bowls it cannot tip over and a low hay rack it can reach comfortably.
