Green iguana and metabolic bone disease: why calcium is central

Metabolic bone disease remains the single most common, and most preventable, condition affecting captive green iguanas. A landmark study by Anderson and Capen published in 1976 in Virchows Archiv B precisely described experimental nutritional osteodystrophy in young green iguanas, showing that a diet low in calcium and high in phosphorus is enough on its own to cause tetany, osteoporosis, and pathological fractures within a matter of weeks (study on Google Scholar). A calcium-to-phosphorus imbalance, not just a shortfall

Green iguanas need a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio well above 1, with most sources recommending something close to 2 to 1. Yet many everyday vegetables and fruits (spinach, lettuce, banana) are naturally low in calcium or high in oxalates that block its absorption. A diet assembled at random, even if it looks varied, can therefore stay structurally deficient.

The inseparable role of UVB

Without adequate UVB exposure, an iguana cannot synthesise the vitamin D3 needed to absorb dietary calcium in the gut, even when that calcium is correctly dosed on the plate: a strong UVB tube, replaced every year, is therefore just as vital a piece of equipment as calcium itself.
