🦎Green iguana: gear and buying guides

The green iguana is a strictly herbivorous arboreal giant reaching 1.5 to 2 m: cute as a juvenile, it becomes a powerful, sometimes territorial animal that ultimately needs a room-sized enclosure. Intense UVB, a 35-40 °C basking spot, high humidity and an experienced keeper are non-negotiable.

Profile : 1.5 to 2 m including tail as an adult, 15 to 20 years of lifespan, expert level.

• 🍖 Food

  Strictly herbivorous: calcium-rich leafy greens (kale, dandelion, watercress), varied vegetables and a little fruit. Animal protein, even occasional, damages its kidneys over time.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Regular lukewarm baths or showers are appreciated, claw trimming is essential, and successive sheds on the tail and dorsal spines need monitoring. UVB deficiency causes severe bone deformities.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  Large horizontal branches and elevated platforms, where it spends most of the day, plus supervised outings for well-habituated individuals. Daily trust-building is the real enrichment.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  Adults need an indoor enclosure at least 2 m tall and 2 to 3 m long, often custom-built, with strong UVB, a 35-40 °C basking spot and humidity of 70% or more. Store-bought terrariums only last the first few years.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A large rigid crate, a towel for padding and recommended gloves: a whipping tail, long claws and a serious bite in an upset adult. Check the applicable regulations before acquiring or moving one.

• 🧰 Accessories

  Multiple T5 UVB fixtures, basking lamps, a mister, thick branches and a water tub large enough for soaking. An adult setup commonly exceeds 1 000 €.
