🐕Basset Hound: gear and buying guides
The Basset Hound is a calm, stubborn dog, low to the ground yet surprisingly heavy, often between 20 and 30 kg. Its long back and short legs mean jumps and repeated stair climbing should be avoided, which points towards ramps and a low bed.
Profile : Low, heavy dog of 20 to 30 kg, dense short coat, moderate energy with a very active nose.

🍖
Food
The breed is prone to weight gain: measure portions carefully and consider a slow-feeder bowl, as an overweight Basset strains its back and joints. A slightly raised bowl can also keep the long ears out of the food.
-
🧴
Care & grooming
Its long drop ears get little airflow: plan on an ear cleaner and a weekly check. Facial folds and jowls need regular wiping, and the short coat only takes a few minutes with a grooming mitt or soft brush.
-
🎾
Toys & enrichment
This is a scent hound first: snuffle mats, tracking games and food-dispensing toys suit it better than ball throwing. Avoid games that encourage jumping or rearing up, which are hard on its spine.
-
🏠
Bedding & habitat
Choose a low bed with an easy-to-step-over edge, in size L to XL (around 90 to 100 cm) since the body is long despite the low height. A ramp for the sofa or the car protects its back.
-
🧳
Travel & safety
Too heavy to lift safely, a Basset should board the car via a folding ramp. A harness cut for broad chests holds better than a collar on that powerful neck, and a crate or crash-tested harness secures every trip.
-
🧰
Accessories
Plan on an adjustable H-harness, a 5 to 10 m long line to manage its nose on walks and a ramp (often 40 to 100 euros). A waterproof coat helps too: its low-slung belly gets dirty fast.
