  Excess weight is the number one enemy of a Dachshund back: weigh out a small-breed kibble ration and keep treats strictly limited. A slow-feeder bowl reins in the greediest eaters.

  Grooming depends on the variety: weekly brushing for the smooth coat, hand-stripping two or three times a year for the wire coat, frequent brushing for the long coat. Watch the nails, which wear down little on such a low-slung dog.
