🦎Veiled chameleon: gear and buying guides

The veiled chameleon is spectacular but stress-prone: it is an animal to watch, not to handle, reserved for experienced keepers. It requires a tall, highly ventilated (often screened) enclosure, quality UVB and misting or a drip system, as it drinks almost exclusively moving water.

Profile : 35 to 60 cm for an adult male, 5 to 8 years of lifespan, intermediate to advanced level.

• 🍖 Food

  Primarily insectivorous: crickets, locusts and roaches gut-loaded with fresh greens then dusted with calcium. Adults may nibble some leaves, but varied insects remain the staple.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

  Long misting sessions 2 to 3 times daily or an automatic mister: dehydration is the top cause of problems. Sunken eyes, dull colours or orange urates should raise immediate concern.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

  A dense network of branches of varied diameters and non-toxic plants (ficus, pothos, hibiscus) recreates its arboreal pathways. Avoid mirrors and sightlines to other reptiles, which cause intense stress.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

  A highly ventilated vertical enclosure of roughly 60 x 60 x 120 cm for an adult male, a 32-35 °C basking spot up top, essential UVB and a beneficial nighttime temperature drop. Strictly solitary housing.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

  A dark rigid box with a fixed branch to grip and journeys kept as short as possible: transport is highly stressful for this species. Never grab it forcibly; let it climb onto a hand or branch.

• 🧰 Accessories

  An automatic mister or drip system, T5 UVB, basking lamp, hygrometer, bottom drainage and feeding tongs. A serious setup runs 400 to 700 €.
