🍖Feeding a Cockatoo: diet, conversion and bans
Cockatoo : Pellets as the base, varied vegetables, few sugary fruits and fatty seeds kept for training work. Several species are prone to obesity, the galah especially.
In short: 30 to 50 cm depending on the species, lifespan of 40 to 60 years and beyond, extremely high noise level. An exuberant, cuddly and noisy parrot whose intense attachment makes it prone to separation anxiety. Its near-constant need for contact and abundant feather powder make it one of the most demanding parrots to live with day to day.
The Cockatoo diet, beyond the seed mix
Quality pellets as the base, topped up with vegetables, measured fruit and a few seeds or nuts; a weight-prone species, so fats are rationed. At 300 to 900 g, quantities stay modest — composition makes the difference, not volume.
Switching foods, gently
A Cockatoo’s diet conversion is won by attrition: pellet share raised in weekly steps, morning servings on an empty crop, regular weigh-ins — never brutal deprivation. Over a 40 to 60 year lifespan, every year of poor diet is paid in fatty liver and deficiencies: the conversion is worth the effort.
The absolute bans
Avocado (lethal), chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, onion and garlic, unpitted stone fruit: the avian blacklist allows no exceptions. Water is changed daily, fresh fruit removed after a few hours. After any suspect ingestion, call the avian vet at once — the metabolism of a 300 to 900 g bird leaves no margin.
