Canary budget: what does this little singer really cost every month?
Published by Planète Pets · managing editor: Clément Lacaille · how our guides are written
A canary is cheap to buy — often between 20 and 40 € depending on the bloodline — but the real monthly budget mostly comes down to diet quality, especially during moult and the singing season. A study by Stefania Casagrande, Rianne Pinxten, Erika Zaid and Marcel Eens, published in 2014 in PLOS ONE, found that in European starlings, a lutein supplement, a carotenoid found in leafy greens and some pelleted feeds, raised song rate and blood antioxidant markers while reducing oxidative damage (see the study). The study covers a different songbird, but it sheds light on a common expense for canary owners: carotenoid-rich supplements and greens marketed as colour or song boosters. What monthly budget should you really plan for?
- a quality seed mix: roughly 2 to 4 € a month for a single canary
- fresh greens and seasonal fruit: 1 to 3 € a month if bought specifically for the bird
- egg food during moult and breeding: 2 to 4 € over the relevant weeks
- cuttlebone or a mineral block: under 2 € a month, replaced every few weeks
- annual vet budget spread out: roughly 3 € a month
All told, budget 8 to 15 € a month, excluding the initial cage and gear, a figure in the same range as the monthly budget for a budgie detailed in our guide to how much a budgie costs per month.
Are "song" or "colour" supplements worth buying?
Rather than a pricey commercial supplement, fresh carotenoid-rich greens such as spinach, watercress or a little broccoli usually offer better value while staying within the budget range above.
Where can you cut costs without harming the canary's health?
The least compressible item stays basic nutrition: a bargain seed mix, often heavy on fatty seeds and short on variety, ends up costing more in vet visits later, as our guide to avian vet budgeting explains. Decorative accessories or premium toys, on the other hand, can safely wait.
Frequently asked questions
Does the purchase price reflect a canary's singing quality?
Not necessarily: a canary from a dedicated song bloodline costs more upfront, but a standard bird that is well fed and stimulated can also develop a rich song.
Does the budget change much with the season?
Yes, moulting and breeding periods raise protein and carotenoid needs, temporarily adding a few euros to the food budget.
Does a single canary cost less than a pair?
Proportionally yes for food, but a single male canary typically sings more, which is less a matter of saving money than a choice based on what you want.
