Feeding Budgies and Canaries: Seed Mixes, Pellets or Fresh Food?
The bird aisle of a pet shop can make your head spin: premium seed mixes, brightly coloured pellets, soft food, honey treats… Yet feeding a budgie or a canary comes down to a few simple principles. The Planète Pets team sorts the wheat from the chaff.
The “seeds only” trap
A seed mix on its own is too fatty and low in vitamin A and calcium. The bird picks out its favourite seeds (often the fattiest, such as sunflower or niger) and leaves the rest. The frequent result: excess weight, a strained liver and deficiencies. Seeds have their place, but as a component of the diet, not the whole of it.
Pellets: a balanced foundation
Extruded pellets deliver a consistent composition in every bite, with no picking possible. They make an excellent base, at around 50 to 70% of the ration according to reputable manufacturers’ recommendations. Expect 8 to 20 € per kilo depending on the range. The transition from seeds must be gradual, over several weeks: a bird may refuse an unfamiliar food to the point of fasting, which is dangerous. If your bird loses weight during the switch, consult an avian vet.
Fresh food, every day
Fresh fruit and vegetables provide vitamins, hydration and enrichment:
- Vegetables: broccoli, grated carrot, spinach (in moderation), bell pepper, endive, courgette.
- Fruit: apple with the seeds removed, pear, strawberry, melon, in small quantities.
- Greens: chickweed, untreated dandelion, sprouted cat grass.
- Off limits: avocado (toxic), chocolate, alcohol, onion, garlic, fruit stones and pips.
Remove uneaten fresh food after a few hours to prevent fermentation, especially in summer.
Canary and budgie: a few nuances
The canary, a stricter seed-eater, enjoys canary-seed-based mixes supplemented with greens and a little egg food during the moult or the breeding season. The budgerigar takes more readily to pellets and varied vegetables. In both cases, a cuttlebone on hand covers part of the calcium requirement, and the water must be changed daily in a clean drinker.
Budget and common sense
Feeding a budgie or a canary properly costs around 10 to 20 € per month, fresh food included. Be wary of sugary commercial treats, best kept for very occasional use. To dig deeper, browse our bird food section or the Planète Pets bird hub.
