Jones, McGhee, and Wilkie published a study on spatial memory in Syrian hamsters foraging for food to hoard in the journal Behavioural Processes in 1990 (research on Google Scholar). Placed in a seven-arm radial maze with only four arms baited with seeds, the hamsters first explored every arm without emptying them, then went back to gather the seeds while almost always avoiding arms they'd already visited — evidence of fine-grained memory for locations rather than random searching.
