A German study on magnetoreception in Roborovski hamsters
Malewski, Begall, Burda, and Fusani published a study on magnetosensitive behavior in the Roborovski hamster in the journal Ethology in 2018 (research on Google Scholar). The researchers measured that hamsters spontaneously built their nest along a preferred direction relative to the magnetic field, and that some individuals learned to associate that direction with a reward — the first evidence of magnetosensitive behavior in this species.
What this means for setting up the cage
This doesn't mean the cage needs to be aligned with a compass, but it's a reminder that a hamster reads its environment using cues invisible to the human eye, on top of the visual and scent cues already known. A stable setup, where the nest isn't shifted from one side of the cage to another without reason, respects this sensitivity better than frequent rearranging.
- Let the hamster choose where its nest goes rather than forcing it into a different corner at every cleaning.
