The dwarf hamster is not a miniature Syrian hamster: it is a distinct species, and a tendency toward hyperglycaemia has been documented in it for a long time. As early as 1979, a study by Herberg, Buchanan, Herbertz, Kern and Kley published in Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology described a genetically driven "inappropriate" hyperglycaemia in this species, along with early ketone body excretion in the urine. A predisposition specific to the species
This sensitivity to diabetes is especially marked in the dwarf hamster and its close relative Campbell's dwarf hamster, while it is far rarer in the Syrian hamster. It does not depend only on the animal's weight: a lean individual can still develop high blood sugar if its diet stays too sweet.
Foods to avoid
Dried fruit, honey-based treats, sugary cereals and cheap mixes loaded with puffed corn should be avoided systematically in this species. Compare options in hamster seed mix or pellets: a low-sugar pellet food, supplemented with low-sugar vegetables and the occasional protein, suits a dwarf hamster better than a generalist mix designed for a Syrian hamster.
Signs to watch for
Unusual thirst, heavy urination, weight loss despite a good appetite, or lethargy should raise concern without delay: these are the classic signs of a blood sugar imbalance in a dwarf hamster.
