Hamster starter kit: the full budget, item by item

🐹 Rodents · 🧰 Accessories · updated 2026-07-11

A hamster starter kit worthy of the name costs 150 to 300 € — a far cry from the 40 € "all-in-one kits" in pet shops, whose tiny cage and 12 cm wheel will need replacing immediately. Here is the budget, item by item, to start off right without waste.

What budget for the habitat, the biggest item?

The enclosure alone accounts for half the budget: a tank or enclosure of at least 100 × 50 cm, i.e. 80 to 200 € (much less second-hand: repurposed aquariums and glass cabinets such as the Detolf). The exact dimensions and traps to avoid are covered in our guide what cage for a hamster. Add 20 to 30 cm of digging bedding from day one.

Which items are essential from the very first day?

Why avoid shop-bought all-in-one kits?

A 40 to 60 cm cage, a wheel so small it arches the back, a bargain-bin water bottle, softwood shavings: every element of the 40 € kit is undersized or unsuitable. You will buy everything again within three months, and the animal will have endured stress and stereotypic behaviour in the meantime. Better to buy once, and buy well — with second-hand finds, an excellent setup fits within 150 €.

What recurring and unexpected costs should you anticipate?

Monthly budget: 15 to 25 € (bedding, food, sundries — quantities detailed in our seed mix or pellets guide). Also set aside a vet fund: an exotics consultation costs 40 to 70 €, a routine treatment 30 to 100 €. Over a 2 to 3 year lifespan, a hamster costs far more than its purchase price (10 to 25 €). All our comparisons are in the accessories category.

Frequently asked questions

Can you start cheaper without sacrificing welfare?

Yes: a second-hand tank (30 to 60 €), plain cardboard hideouts, foraged cork tunnels, DIY platforms. The only items never to skimp on: floor space, bedding and the wheel.

Should everything be set up before the hamster arrives?

Absolutely: complete habitat, bedding packed down, water and food supplies ready. Once it arrives, leave it in peace for several days without rearranging anything.

Is the digging box part of the basic kit?

It is an excellent 10 to 20 € addition, covered in our guide to the digging box; the priority remains deep bedding in the main habitat.
