African fat-tailed gecko terrarium: getting the setup right

The African fat-tailed gecko (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus) shares the same family as the leopard gecko and a very similar lifestyle: nocturnal, ground-dwelling, active on the floor rather than up high. That behavioural closeness shows up in studies of behavioural thermoregulation in nocturnal, ground-dwelling geckos, such as Autumn and De Nardo's (1995) work on the western banded gecko, which found that actively choosing microclimates boosts growth in these species. Size and layout
A 60 × 45 cm floor footprint suits an adult, with several hides spread between the warm and cool zones — this gecko is shyer and more stressed by exposure than a bearded dragon, so it needs more hiding spots than vertical space. The same sizing pointers as for the leopard gecko broadly apply, adjusted to the individual's adult size.
Substrate and humidity
Unlike the leopard gecko, the African fat-tailed gecko comes from Sahelian regions that stay more humid part of the year: a lightly moisture-retaining substrate (coconut fibre mixed with a little topsoil) works better than a purely desert-style substrate. Temperature and lighting
A hot spot between 29 and 32 °C at floor level, a cool zone around 22-24 °C, and no need for intense UVB: this strictly nocturnal gecko does fine with low ambient lighting, unlike diurnal species. A thermostat is still non-negotiable to keep the hot spot safe.

Does the African fat-tailed gecko climb?
Very little: prioritise floor space and hides over terrarium height.
Does it need a permanent water source?
Yes, a small shallow dish, in addition to the moist hide, guarantees constant access to water.
Can two females be housed together?
That's sometimes possible with monitoring and enough hides, but never two males, due to the risk of territorial fighting.
